چکیده
We present an approximation for the numerical calculation ofČerenkov radio pulses in the Fraunhofer limit from very high energy showers in dense media. We compare it to full Montecarlo simulations in ice studying its range of applicability and show how it can be extended with a simple algorithm. The approximation reproduces well the angular distribution of the pulse around thě Cerenkov direction. An improved parameterization for the frequency spectrum in thě Cerenkov direction is given for phenomenolgical applications. We extend the method to study the pulses produced by showers at distances at which the Fraunhofer limit does not apply, and give the ranges of distances and frequencies in which Fraunhofer approximation is good enough for interpreting future experimental data. Our results are relevant for the detection of very high energy neutrinos with this technique.

Radio-Emission from Cosmic Ray Air-Showers - A Theoretical Perspective for LOPES
High-energy cosmic ray air-showers have been known for over 30 years to emit strong radio pulses in the regime between a few and several 100 MHz (Allan 1971). To date, however, a thorough analysis of the emission mechanisms has not yet been conducted. Adopting a simplified shower geometry and electron-positron energy distribution, we calculate theoretical pulse spectra in the scheme of synchrot...
متن کاملAmplitude calibration of a digital radio antenna array for measuring cosmic ray air showers
Radio pulses are emitted during the development of air showers, where air showers are generated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays entering the Earth’s atmosphere. These nanosecond short pulses are presently investigated by various experiments for the purpose of using them as a new detection technique for cosmic particles. For an array of 30 digital radio antennas (LOPES experiment) an absolute a...
متن کاملObservation of the Askaryan effect: coherent microwave Cherenkov emission from charge asymmetry in high-energy particle cascades.
We present the first direct experimental evidence for the charge excess in high-energy particle showers and corresponding radio emission predicted nearly 40 years ago by Askaryan. We directed picosecond pulses of GeV bremsstrahlung photons at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam into a 3.5 ton silica sand target, producing electromagnetic showers several meters long. A series of antennas spanning 0.3...
متن کاملCherenkov Radio Pulses from Eev Neutrino Interactions: the Lpm Effect
We study the implications of the LPM effect for the Cherenkov radiation of EeV electromagnetic showers in the coherent radiowave regime for ice. We show that for showers above 100 PeV the electric field scales with shower energy but has a markedly narrower angular distribution than for lower energy showers. We give an electric field frequency and angular spectrum parameter-ization valid for sho...
متن کاملMonte Carlo simulations of geosynchrotron radio emission from CORSIKA-simulated air showers
We present simulations performed with REAS2, a new Monte Carlo code for the calculation of geosynchrotron radio emission from extensive air showers. The code uses thoroughly tested time-domain radio emission routines in conjunction with a realistic air shower model based on per-shower multi-dimensional CORSIKA-generated histograms. We assess in detail how the transition from simpler, parametris...
